Building a Healthier Community Together

Staying healthy can be hard. Life today is busy with so many things: work, home, family and friends, relaxation. Keeping up with health can fall by the wayside in favor of quick meals and pursuing the big promotion.

One of the things that can make staying healthy easier is a community of like-minded individuals who can help on the journey. It’s been found that walking with friends can help to reduce risks of heart disease, diabetes, and other illnesses. While getting a few members of local communities to all focus on their health is important, there are also national campaigns that focus the attention of thousands of people to getting healthy.

September is both Pain Awareness Month and Healthy Aging Month. Both are key in living a good life and Omron has products that supports their missions as well as the people involved in them.

Pain Awareness Month

Pain Awareness Month got its start in 2001 and has been observed in September every year since. It’s a time for people around the country to get together and raise awareness around chronic pain and the problems surrounding it.

General pain is much more prevalent than many seem to realize. This month is a great opportunity for raising funds for research and treatment. Various organizations have come together and released toolkits for various groups of people such as nurses, pharmacists, and older individuals.

Besides raising funds and awareness, the month is an opportunity for people going through chronic pain to realize they’re not alone and get support from others who are going through the same thing. Chronic pain is invisible and can be isolating. Knowing there are others can be a mental burden lessoned.

Healthy Aging Month

September is also Healthy Aging Month. Everyone ages. It’s important to try to make aging as easy as possible to minimize health problems. Healthy aging also allows people to stay active and go on adventures into their later years.

While the stereotype of an older adult used to be someone frail, who couldn’t do much by themselves, that image is slowly fading. Older adults can do amazing things well into their 70s or 80s. In 2015, a 105-year-old beat his own record for oldest competitive sprinter while in 2023 a 102-year-old became the oldest person to finish a half marathon.

While not everyone will be running marathons in their hundreds, keeping mobile when ageing is important. Healthy Aging Month is dedicated to focusing attention on positive aspects of aging. It began 30 years ago, and September is the second time of the year that celebrates positive aging along with Older Americans Month in May. Events promote taking responsibility for one’s health, including physically, mentally, socially, or even financially.

There are many success stories and Forbes magazine started a “50 over 50” list to display them.
