Microsoft’s Media Maestro Takes on PlayStation’s Gaming Phenom
The battle wages on as new upgraded consoles with spiffy subtitles appear. But what is the One S? And why is the new PS4 a Pro?
Normally, when an updated current gen console comes out its just slimmer. The new repackaged Xbox One S and PlayStation4 both offer major upgrades that gamers will love.
They also present you with an opportunity to offer add-on accessories that will benefit your customers—and your bottom line.
Visual Presentation — The 4K Ultra HD Difference
4K UHD is the new HD. Once considered a niche technology, it is slowly becoming more popular in the television market. More 4K UHD Blu-rays are being produced but 4K Blu-ray players are limited and expensive.
Enter Microsoft.
One of the key features of the Xbox One S is that it has a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player. It can also upscale older games and media to 4K. The Xbox One S is one of the cheapest Ultra HD Blu-ray players on the market.
Many saw this as a leap ahead of Sony and the Playstation4. When Sony announced the PS4 Pro, some expected it to also feature a 4K UHD Player, but it can only upscale current media to 4K. This means that gamer’s looking for a console that can push the limits of their 4K TV won’t find it with PlayStation.

Gaming Power — Loading Speeds and Lag Times
Tech Radar reports that “there’s no real difference between the hardware inside the Xbox One” and the Xbox One S. Meaning, most of Microsoft’s emphasis has been on slimming down the console and increasing the media experience.
Microsoft wants the Xbox One S to be your home entertainment hub.
But targeted to the hardcore console gamer, the PS4 Pro has increased power “via boosted CPU and GPU” and “more stable frame rates” states Tech Radar. The PS4 Pro is also incorporating more VR technology into its gameplay.
Whereas the Xbox One S is concerned with overall media presentation, the PS4 Pro has opted to emphasize the gaming experience.

Console Dimensions and Weight — Does Size Matter?
The third key element many consumers are looking for when shopping for consoles is simply the look.
Microsoft has often been criticized in the past for the design of their consoles, which often feature a bulky, external power supply. But, with the introduction of the Xbox One S, that external power supply is a thing of the past. The One S is roughly 40% smaller than Xbox One and they built the power supply into the console.
On the flipside, the PS4 Pro is actually just slightly larger than the original PS4. The PS4 Pro does still take up a lot of room, but thanks to its black design it’s not quite as noticeable as some items may be.
Consumers looking to streamline their home entertainment setups may opt for the Xbox One S, which has been redesigned with home entertainment in mind.
