As we move towards the mid-point of 2020, it’s time to look at the cord cutting trend. We haven’t discussed it in a while, but it is still a growing trend. In fact, more than 25 million Americans have become cord cutters, and that number is projected to nearly triple by 2023.
Streaming services have made life a little easier with being able to watch favorite shows virtually everywhere. The streaming services that have remained on the front lines include Netflix, Hulu, and HBO Go, but now there are more!
Since streaming services have gained popularity, traditional networks have entered the picture and the online streaming king has adapted to a new world. These new networks include options such as Disney+, Apple TV, Peacock (NBC), CBS All Access, and live TV streaming options through YouTube.
Prior to the launch of Disney+, according to Statista:
“The most popular video streaming service as of September 2019 was YouTube, with 163.75 million monthly active users. Netflix ranked second with 46.55 million MAU, followed by Hulu with just under 26.5 million.”
A night at home isn’t such a bad idea now that there is an increased number of options to choose from. Imagine wanting to watch a movie, but it isn’t available on Netflix or Hulu, just download Disney+ for endless amounts of Disney classics or hop on YouTube to rent movies for just $3.99!
Since its debut in November, Disney+ has pulled in 50 million subscribers, as of April 2020.
More networks are creating their own version of streaming services with set monthly costs, pulling shows from other streaming services. In the end, the act of subscribing to multiple streaming services might incur the same monthly costs as a cable package, but tailored access is sometimes worth the cost.
However, some streaming services will be impacted heavily due to other networks chiming in, developing their own platform. The new streaming service Peacock will be the home to shows aired on NBC.
The Verge mentions that:
“If studios like NBCU are going to compete with Netflix, Amazon, Apple and everyone else, they’re going to need to launch their own service, which means getting into the messy licensing fights that Hulu was so useful for avoiding. HBO Max, Disney+, and CBS All Access are all launching for the same reason: the real money is in running your service, and without a channel, you’ll be left out.”
