Men’s Health Month: Tools to Help Keep Their Heart in Motion

June is Men’s Health Month. This is the season when we take time to raise awareness for preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys. This encompasses a wide variety of health categories including cardiovascular health, mental health, prostate health, diabetes, and nutrition/obesity, among other issues.

Heart disease is the most common cause of death for men in the U.S. According to the American Heart Association, over 39 million American men (1 in 3) suffer from one or more of these conditions. Every year, 1 in 4 men die of cardiovascular disease. Other conditions men may experience as they age include diabetes and high blood pressure.

Mental Health

It’s not just the body that goes through changes with age. Mental health and wellbeing are also an important part of Men’s Health Month. Men make about two-thirds as many healthcare provider visits as women do. When they do see a healthcare provider, they’re often reluctant to talk about what’s really going on, especially if it has anything to do with their emotional state or mood. It’s also hard for some men to recognize that some of the physical symptoms they may experience —things like chronic pain and digestive problems — could be caused by a mental health issue such as depression, anxiety, or stress.

Here are just some statistics on men’s mental health:

• The suicide rate for men is 4 times higher in comparison to women; women are more likely to attempt suicide, whereas men are more likely to succeed.

• In the United States, 75% of suicides are men.

• Men are nearly three times more likely than women to become alcohol dependent (8.7% of men are alcohol dependent compared to 3.3% of women).

• Men are more likely to use (and die from) illegal drugs.

Most people know a healthy diet and lifestyle are the most common contributors to good overall health. Modest changes to diet and consistent exercise can help to reduce the risk of developing these diseases. These lifestyle choices can also combat some of the overall stress. However, monitoring health and checking in with the body helps keep people accountable. There are many ways Omron can help keep you and your customers’ health in check. These include blood pressure monitors, TENS machines, and body composition scales.
