America is growing older

September is Healthy Aging® Month. Started by the editor-in-chief of Healthy Aging® Magazine, the month-long campaign’s goal is to “focus national attention on the positive aspects of growing older.”

The benefits of healthy and active aging cannot be overstated. Especially since statistics show that America is growing older.

According to the US Census Bureau:

  • “By 2030, all baby boomers will be older than age 65. This will expand the size of the older population so that 1 in every 5 residents will be retirement age.
  • “By 2035, there will be 78 million people 65 years and older compared to 76.7 million (previously 76.4 million) under the age of 18.”

This means older people will outnumber children for the first time in US history!

Active Aging

The National Council on Aging (NCA) finds that about eight out of ten older adults have at least one chronic disease. And that over three-quarters have at least two. The big four are heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes.

The NCA also shows that “90% of Americans aged 55+ are at risk for hypertension, or high blood pressure.”

And the Population Reference Bureau reports that “Obesity rates among adults ages 60 and older have been increasing, standing at about 41 percent in 2015-2016.”

Given the statistics, America’s seniors MUST embrace an active aging lifestyle. Or they risk sentencing themselves to unnecessary hardships, breaking the medical care system, and creating a huge burden for others to bear.

Many chronic issues can be reduced, eliminated, or managed better through proactive lifestyle changes. These include exercise, weight loss, and better heart health.

4 Steps to Active Aging with Omron

The path of least resistance to getting more exercise is the simple act of walking. Omron makes pedometers that not only track steps but can differentiate between normal walking and power walking or aerobics. Higher-end units can even track calories burned and provide more information about the overall activity level.

Weight loss can be a goal. But a full-body-sensing monitor and scale provide a more comprehensive look at a body’s composition, which does change over time. Omron scales measure:

  • Body fat percentage
  • Body mass index (BMI)
  • Skeletal muscle
  • Resting metabolism
  • Visceral fat
  • Body age
  • body weight

Pain can be a detriment to an active lifestyle. Small, portable, and powerful TENS units from Omron can provide drug-free pain relief for stiff and sore muscles.

And, of course, monitoring heart health is extremely important, especially for those under a doctor’s mandate. So, keeping track of blood pressure levels outside the doctor’s office is important. Omron blood pressure monitors are FSA-approved, doctor recommended, and easy to use.

Omron + healthy living = heart-healthy aging

Omron’s Going for Zero campaign is dedicated to creating “a world without heart attacks or strokes.” They are doing this by creating user-friendly technology that fosters personal fitness, heart health, and pain relief.

Take advantage of the annual September is Healthy Aging® Month focus to encourage your older customers to take control of their health—and their heart health. Urge them to choose proactive, healthy living options such as exercise, healthier eating habits, weight control, and Omron.
