Making new year resolutions is nothing new. People have been doing it for at least 4,000 years, making promises to do better. Back then, the new year often timed with spring crop planting. However, we can thank the Romans for the date of January 1. Around 46 BC, Julius Caesar decreed the new year should start then.
Here in the US, the kinds of new year resolutions don’t change much from year to year, but the ranking order does.
So, what are the 2024 new year resolutions?
Forbes Health through OnePoll conducted a survey in October 2023.
The Top 10 New Year Resolutions for 2024 are:
Interestingly, 49% plan on using a fitness app to help stick to their resolution! That’s important because the same poll showed the average resolution lasted less than 4 months. And research from PLoS One indicates action resolutions are more easily kept than avoidance ones.
Whether your customers want a simple fitness tracker or the bigger displays and more in-depth features of smartwatches, Garmin has a wide variety of fitness-focused wearables to help them meet their health and fitness goals.
Common to all are:
The two primary differences between a Garmin fitness tracker and a Garmin fitness watch are:
• Shape:
Activity and entry-level fitness trackers feature a band with a narrow, embedded display face. The exception to this is the vívofit jr. 3. It’s a next-level tracker designed for kids. The face is a bit larger as it includes app adventures the child can unlock by staying active. In contrast, fitness watches have larger, brighter, and more colorful faces and are generally round like a classic watch.
• Features:
For example, the vívofit 4 activity tracker is for smaller wrists. It includes tracking steps, distance, and calories burned. They can also monitor sleep and provide personalized daily step goals. And the Garmin vívosmart 5 fitness tracker is designed for women. It is “smarter” and monitors respiration, Body Battery energy levels, hydration, stress, and heart rate. Built-in sports apps include walking, running, yoga, and cardio. They’ll even accept smart notifications from a paired smartphone.
On the other end of the feature-complexity range is the Garmin Venu series with their distinct bezels and large, colorful displays. These work with your customers’ health and fitness goals to provide a more complete picture of a wearer’s health. There are more built-in indoor and GPS sports apps and even a wheelchair mode. Your customers can download music directly to the watch, make contactless payments, and more.
As you might expect, the more features there are the higher the price point.
There’s a Garmin fitness watch that sits in the sweet spot — the vívoactive 5. Released in September 2023, the vívoactive 5 features a wide range of health monitoring features that can support a wearer’s fitness goals.
It incorporates all the features found on less expensive fitness trackers as well as many of the higher-end fitness watches. Plus, it provides personal insights on how sleep, naps, daily activities, and high stress impact energy levels. It even lets the wearer know how much time is needed to recover to take on any fitness challenge.
In addition to daily steps and calories burned, there are more than 30 preloaded GPS and indoor sports apps, ranging from walking and running to pickleball, rowing, and more. There are activities for wheelchair users too. Customers can even create their own step-by-step workouts from more than 1,600 exercises in the Garmin Connect app and send them directly to the watch.
So instead of just one or two apps to support fitness goals, vívoactive 5 has many, making it the ideal on-wrist fitness coach. It even has two font sizes to better view smart notifications, workout data, etc.
And like all smartwatches, it pairs with a compatible smartphone. Safety and tracking features include sending a message with the wearer’s live location (when available) to chosen emergency contacts. It also supports Garmin Pay contactless payments and the ability to download songs and playlists. What’s more, users can see their health and fitness information in the Garmin Connect app and download apps, watch faces, and more from the Connect IQ Store right on the watch, or find more options in the smartphone app.
For your customers who are seriously into a particularly vigorous sport or multiple sports, Garmin has them covered too. Among other features, these watches include navigation sensors and internal GPS with maps. Many also include solar charging, vastly extending battery life.
And for your customers looking for a classic analog watch look that also has a full suite of health and wellness tools, introduce them to vívomove Trend Hybrid smartwatches. These have real watch hands that move aside to reveal a hidden touchscreen.
And the small and stylish Lily is specifically designed for women. It is available in both Classic and Sport edition models. Both have a patterned lens and when the wearer flicks her wrist, a touchscreen appears. Classic’s digital display also emulates analog watch hands and features an Italian leather band.
Another survey conducted in October 2023 by OnePoll was for Almond Breeze. It found:
Another revealing statistic: 48% agree it is easier to make incremental lifestyle changes while 29% are interested in jumping in all at once.
And although 52% give up on their resolutions by March, Garmin’s use of apps in their fitness trackers and smartwatches, combined with their good looks and robust features, should encourage your customers interested in fitness to stay the course, making fitness-oriented new year resolutions easier to keep.
